Level Three – Believe Me

Once there were two men who lived in adjacent caves. They talked extensively concerning the Satin Black Ball rolling across the Black Satin Plain. The Queen of that place had asked one man for further information on this scenario as she had become fascinated by her inability to discover the size and speed of the ball.

One man said to the other, I shall tell the queen that the ball is the size of a house, rolling across the plain at the speed of a galloping horse. I shall tell her that I know this because I am the creator of this vision.

The second man said, I’m not sure that you can claim any rights over this vision once it has been disseminated. It has a life of its own now, and you cannot impose your whims upon a tale that has assumed a cultural identity.

I can do what I like, said man One and went to see the Queen.

The first man, in reality there was only one, said to the Queen, I am the creator of this vision and I decree that no more information shall enhance this vision and thus the scale of the ball and the pace thereof, shall never be revealed.

The Queen said to the man from the cave, I am Queen, and I shall do the decreeing around here. I decree that there shall be a soundtrack to the vision in the form of a whooshing noise, normally accompanying the passage, nearby, of a sizeable object moving at great speed. A train might be a good example or a light aircraft just before it takes off. This extra information has confirmed my suspicions that the Satin Black Ball is in fact massive, and moving at great speed, which I have to say I find very satisfying.

The Cave Man said, you are treading on the toes of questions of authorship and audience and I should advise you before we go any further that this line of enquiry can only end in tears of confusion.

The Queen threw the man into a dark prison cell saying, Leave this vision to me, I forbid you from entering the Satin Black Plain forever. You may be the originator of this vision, but you are not the custodian, the stars do not circle your head.

But the imprisoned man broke his banishment and visited the Satin Black Plain in his mind. Ignoring the whooshing sound, which he attributed to a local wind, he noticed that the shadow of the ball had moved from it’s place exact, and was now at a changed angle. As he was not happy to remain in the prison, the Cave Man summoned the Queen by rattling the bars of his cell door. He said to the Queen, If you are still set on understanding this vision, I may be able to help. The shadow of the Black Satin Ball has moved, this may allow us to ascertain the flow of time upon the Black Satin Plain. The Queen said, Aha, now your talking.
