The Journey Home – Isle of Women

Now the wind stayed its hand and the shipe was quiet and still for many days, thus the shipe could not travel whither they wished and must follow the current. They took nought but water and became sore hungry, so when an island offered its shore close, they needs must swim to tow their shipe to shore and arrived exhausted upon the sand there. A woman pulled them away to a shelter and tended them most careful. When food had been taken and Vivainne and the Blue Knight regained themselves, some women asked Vivainne, pointing at the Blue Knight. What creature is this, for surely, we have not seen its like on our island before.

Vivainne laughed and said that then perhaps they were most blessed who have not been under the sway of men. She told them of the world from whence she came and how women there must live under the rule of men or not at all.

The island women were happy to kill the Blue Knight until Vivainne related the Quest to which she and the Blue Knight were sworn, to bring balance and harmony to all.

Here we see a page taken from the Book of the Guardians.

Vivainne asked how the women had come to this isle and who was set to guide them. The women recounted a story much like that of the Isle of Men, it seemed that the women appeared, washed by the sea upon the rocky shore. But as to guidance, the women became confused and could not answer. Surely, they said each one must make their own way, if one wants to grow a cabbage then let it be so, if another would grow a squash then she may grow a squash beside it. If one builds a shelter here, then another might build onto that another part.

Vivainne and the blue Knight were again amazed to watch as each woman toiled hard by themselves. To move a timber a woman would struggle for an whole day to bring it to where she wanted, whilst another might keep a spare timber in the same place.

The Blue Knight and Vivainne asked the women if they might make a better way for them to follow and so they did that.

Vivainne and the Blue Knight sat once more through the darkness in discussion and went out when the stars had hid into the first light to bring their plans to the women.

Listen, half the women must take a black stone and half a white stone, on the first day each woman with a black stone must help with the work of a white stone woman and the next day the white stone women must help with the work of a black stone woman. This will make each day more fruitful but there should be some way for the women to work on great works so all might benefit.

Here we see Vivaiinne and the Blue Knight swimming to shore pulling their boat. One suspects that it is unlikely that they would have swum with their helmets and mail, but it does help the reader to recognise the heroes.

Listen, if some woman imagines a great work which might benefit the whole then there should be a ballot. All who agree to the thought might place their stone in a bowl and all who disagree in another. If there are more in the agree bowl then the work will go forth. The strongest colour in the agree bowl will do the work until it is complete.

The women of the Isle agreed to try this way and so it was. The crops were grown in larger groups and more was grown. The building of shelters and other constructions was made possible and in time irrigation and great works were done. In some time, the women came prosperous and organised to live well.

In time Vivainne and the Blue Knight decided that they must journey home once more and so taking leave of the women they set sail.
